Not long ago, this picture made the rounds on social media, along with a link to its blog post. These six women, all of various heights and body shapes, stand in white shorts and white tank tops. The writer states that all of these women weigh the “normal” Australian weight for women of 154 pounds. And you know what? Every single one of them wears a different dress size!

I love this picture because it visually states what we women need to realize: there’s not one perfect body type or shape. In reality, there are many, many perfect body types and shapes! Whether you’ve inherited your mom’s hippiness or you’re blessed with an hourglass figure, what’s important is that you hold your head high, wear clothes that you love that make you feel great, and walk with confidence. Our moms always told us that true beauty comes from within, and that is so true.

And remember, our young girls are looking to us as role models. So if you’re worried about your own daughter, friend or niece’s attitude towards their body, the best thing to do is talk positively and act confidently about your own.

So how do you work on exuding that confident body? The first thing to do is take steps to feel good about yourself!

  • Diet? Put that word away! Instead, focus on eating healthy and making healthy choices. We could all stand to have more fruits and vegetables in our diet, and when our young women see us making these decisions, they will want to as well.
  • Exercise? Yes, but don’t make it a chore! It’s so important to get moving every day, and the only way you will stick with it is to find something you enjoy doing. For me, I love walking. I make it a point to find time to get to the track or a park and walk about four miles every day. It clears my head, gives me a chance to enjoy being outdoors, and even helps me sleep better! I’ve had a lot of friends who have worked on the “Couch to 5K” program, and it has turned them on to running. And of course there are always great classes, like Zumba and water aerobics, that you can register for at your local recreation center or Y. This not only makes exercise fun, but gets you doing it with a group of people who help encourage each other along the way. Bottom line is to MOVE – however you choose – just be sure you MOVE!
  • Fashion? Of course! Don’t stress out about not being a size 4. When you shop, make sure you are buying clothes that fit well and you feel comfortable wearing. You’d be surprised at how much better you feel about yourself when you don’t have to worry about a roll of skin hanging over a tight-waisted pair of pants. With pants that fit, you automatically feel fit and trim! It’s like an instant makeover.
