An Unexpected Path July 09 2015, 3 Comments

When I was a girl growing up in North Carolina, I never expected to be a role model for anyone. Except maybe my children! My parents, like most parents, encouraged me and told me I could be anything I wanted to be, but I never really expected to be president or a famous actress.

Well, it turns out, you don’t have to be the first woman president or the star of the women’s soccer team to be a role model to other women. Through hard work and the grace of God, I have had a successful career doing something that I love, which is working with elderly people and their families through our wonderful Hospice and Palliative Care. I also had the inspiration to create an innovative new fashion trend for women, which I have named Go Free Pants, and that idea led me to becoming an entrepreneur and figuring out the ins and outs of running my own business.

Through it all, I have talked with many other woman, and have learned from their experiences while also being able to share my own. The challenges, the struggles, the achievements, the heartbreak and the joys.

Not long ago I was asked to share my story with a fabulous writer, Ann Sourbeer Morris. She had the wonderful idea of creating a book full of inspirational stories of women and their careers, to help show others that sometimes life might not go exactly how you expect it to, but that even with the challenges and road blocks you can find a way to succeed.

Together with 22 other women, we have helped Ann tell our stories. I am so excited that the book, Unexpected Pathways: Journeys of Women in the Workforce, is finally published and available for purchase either through Amazon or Create Space.

I still don’t consider myself a role model. But I am always willing to share my story, and exchange experiences with others. After all, it is only through talking with each other, corroborating on ideas and sharing our experiences, both good and bad, that we can all learn, grown and improve ourselves.

I am proud to have been able to be a part of this book, and encourage you to read it and share it with other special people in your life, to let the stories from all of these strong, courageous women help inspire you to be your very best.
